This example has the bronze like color tone to the brass frequently seen produced by this maker. Pack swords are easily distinguishable by this unique color. There is still some gilt remaining across the surfaces of this hilt and it appears to rate at about 85-90%. The pommel, backstrap and "D" guard feature raised out oak leaf sprigs. The ferrule features more of the same. The crossguard is composed of an open-winged bird, which is highly detailed. It is obvious someone spent a lot of time hand-enhancing the feathering to the wings, the feathering to the breast and also the head detail. The same period artisan lent his talent to enhancing the oak leaves and acorns throughout the rest of the hilt. This hilt is identical to the example shown in Angolia on page 112. The grip is a fine black celluloid over wood. It is in perfect condition and is wrapped with triple-twisted wire. The wire is of small girth and the center example is slightly larger. The fine long blade measures 34-inches in length. It is the matte finish frequently used by this producer on later made swords. The blade is in mint condition. The reverse ricasso is etched with the large Siegfried Waffen trademark. It features a horseshoe device which encloses details of the firm. Inside is the hammering Wagnerian hero. The scabbard is nice and straight throughout and has outstanding original paint. This paint still retains its original luster and is in near mint condition. This is a fine sword and not a commonly seen example. Excellent Plus, Plus

GERMAN SS POLICE SWORD $2,500
SSPOL - POLICE NCO DEGEN - No Maker (WKC)
The hilt of this Police degen is in excellent condition with outstanding nickel-plated finish. Although the hilt has not been cleaned in many years, it is possible to see that this plating throughout is 100%. The "D" guard has a good shape and flows nicely through the quillon teardrop. The pommel cap is a more rounded type than we usually see, but it is smooth indicating it is the NCO variety. The ferrule reflects the six standing oak leaves with acorns separating them. All oak leaves have a blackening in the veins and they look to have been pretty much left as they were casted. The ebony grip is a real beauty having the thirteen unwrapped sections. This grip does not appear to have ever been lacquer coated and it reflects a pleasing natural darker wood finish. There is an NCO Police insignia set into this grip. It is the flatter type only used for NCO Police degens and it reflects an open-winged eagle and swastika superimposed over a wreath of oak leaves. This insignia shows no wear and is an excellent indication of the overall condition of this piece. Gracing the hilt, there is an original Police portepee. The portepee is the larger leather type and it is completely set in place. This knot is in the original tie and reflects triple stitching. It has two sets of aluminum stitch wire which run up the edges and an accent wire of red in the center. The leather is in perfect condition throughout and still is supple. The slide is a leather type accented with red and bullion thread. The stem is the flat style having crochet-like bullion, and you can see the metal through it. The lower ball is an oval style having bullion thread with alternating green thread. The insert is a cat's anus style green. A very fine knot here which is definitely original to this piece. A very fine looking hilt here! The blade is also a beauty being the matte finished variety and measuring 31-inches in length. The obverse ricasso has no maker mark, but the reverse ricasso has a set of SS runes stamped into it. These runes were only used by WKC, and despite the fact that this example is unmarked, it was made by this firm. If you are not familiar with how these runes look you can see an identical stamping on page 489, upper of my SS Book. The original brown leather blade buffer is in place protecting this mint example. The scabbard is also a fine example. It is completely dent free and has outstanding original black paint. This paint shows almost no age and is in mint condition. This is a fine scabbard shell to go with such an excellent degen. Obviously, this piece was not used much. The upper scabbard fitting is also a beauty having fine nickel plating and also having 100% of the blackening between the Wotan's knot. This scabbard mount is retained by two domehead screws, one on each of the lower knot curls. This is an outstanding NCO example, and those with SS runes stamped into the ricasso, are very desirable by SS collectors. Mint
